Headaches can be caused by a variety of physical, emotional and environmental factors, including diet, stress, allergens, menstruation, and change in the weather.
Except for brain tumors, headaches from mild to severe can be treated successfully with acupuncture. Acupuncture is effective because it normalizes the blood pressure, balances the hormones and reduces the stress. Many serious eye problems such as cataracts and glaucoma, which could cause headaches, can be effectively corrected by acupuncture. The principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine is to restore and maintain the harmony between various organs in the human body and the harmony between body and surrounding nature.
Acupuncture treatment could remove dependency on drugs for pain relief. Some drugs are often more harmful than the headache itself.
Other headache remedies have been shown to cause liver damage or to be addictive. Acupuncture treatments can provide safe pain relief.
Migraine headaches is a type of intense, periodically returning headache, usually limited to one side of head. According to the National Headache Foundation, as many as 28 million Americans suffer from migraine headache each year. If the headache is associated with flashing lights or blindness, or numbness on side of head, it is call "classic" migraine or migraine with "aura". Many of the pain relive medications for migraines either do not work as needed, or simply mask an underlying condition. Acupuncture, however, proves to be an excellent alternative by reducing the migraine episodes.
Back Pain is one of the most common reasons people see a health care provide. It has been estimated that up to 80% of the world's population will suffer from back pain at some point in their lifes.
Back pain is commonly considered a nerve impingement syndrome. It may be caused by muscle strain or a slipped intervertebral disk, or it may be associated with some degenerative disease of the bones, joints of the spine. The spine is under constant stress in daily living. Exercise, sitting and standing can strain the muscles and damage ligaments or disks and pull them out of place.
Acupuncture therapy has been demonstrated to be effective of relieving the pain. The length of treatment must be determined by the practitioner according to each case. In most cases, significant improvements can be observed after acupuncture treatment.
Acupuncture strengthens the soft tissues around the vertebrae and holds them in place. Traditional Chinese Medicine call it removing the blockage and reviving the usual of energy.
There have been reports that herniated and even disintegrated disks were healed with acupuncture treatment.
Practitioners in this country have discovered that acupuncture can trigger the brain to release an opiate-like chemical called endorphins to relieve pain immediately. For someone who has been suffering from chronic or acute back pain, acupuncture is certainly a worthwhile medical alternative to explore.
The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, rheumatic and rheumatoid arthritis. The common symptoms for all these conditions are joint pain and stiffness, sometimes swelling.
Acupuncture cannot reverse the deformation of bones caused by arthritis, but it can relieve the pain and stiffness and reduce the swelling.
Up to the present moment, no one has been able to come up with a miracle drug for this painful arthritis. Acupuncture is the only known method that could relieve the pain and restore the patient to a healthy condition. Over the past few thousand years, Chinese have been using acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to treat arthritis.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is an entrapment neuropathy of the median nerve at the wrist. In other words, the nerve that travels from one's arm to parts of the hand gets entrapped within the carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel consists of some tissues (the transverse carpal ligament and nine flexor tendons) that surround the median nerve as it passes through the wrist and palm area. If this median nerve gets compressed due, in part, to a repetitive stress, such as typing, then carpal tunnel syndrome is one disorder that may result.
Thus, CTS occurs when there is chronic pressure on the median nerve in the wrist area. Patients with CTS go to the doctor with pain in the wrist that radiates into the hand, and sometimes into the forearm; numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers; and weakness in the hand.
CTS occurs more commonly in workers whose tasks involve repetitive hand movements including computer keyboard operators. CTS is a particularly severe example of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). The U.S. National Center for Health Statistics estimated there were over 1.89 million cases of CTS in the U.S. Other debilitating forms of RSI are even more prevalent.
Direct injection of steroids into the carpal tunnel may provide only temporary relief. After 2 to 4 months, between 65 and 90% of patients can be expected to have recurrence of symptoms.
Operative release of the transverse carpal ligament is performed in approximately 40% of CTS cases, followed by a 2 to 3 months period of rehabilitation. But recurrence of symptoms is very often even after the operation.
Acupuncture has been approved effective to relief the pain in CTS and improve the weakness in the hand.
As its name suggests, tendonitis is a condition involving the tendons, those flexible, fibrous bands of tissue that connect muscles to the bones. To be more precise, tendons transmit the power of a muscle to move your bones.
Tendonitis pain occurs when tendons become irritated by tiny tears. Muscle movement becomes painfully difficult when tendons become inflamed.
Overuse is the most common cause of tendonitis. Tendons which are called upon to perform tasks that they're not used frequently become inflamed.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are able to reduce the inflammation of the tendons and relief the pain.
Asthma is a significant health problem affecting 15 million people in the United States. Although symptoms can be controlled with drug therapy; increasingly, patients are seeking alternative, non-drug therapies to manage this disease. Acupuncture can effectively relieve the symptoms of asthmatic patient. Using acupuncture as a treatment is safer than the prolonged use of drugs.
In addition, acupuncture can make the adrenal glands work more effectively to generate an adrenal hormone called Cortisol. Cortisol, a naturally produced substance similar in effect to Cortisone, relieves the asthma symptoms without the harmful side effects of Cortisone.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine sometimes could cure asthma.
The benefits of acupuncture and TCM in treatment for the infertile couple can be found in early Chinese medical literature dating back to the 11 AD.
In Chinese tradition, having children are considered continuing the root of the family, therefore treating infertility became a very important part in TCM.
Majority infertile couples, according to western medical test, are nothing wrong with their health, their fallopian tubes are open, their hormone level is normal. While from traditional Chinese medicine point of view, people could have imbalance body which does not show in western medical test but will cause infertility problems. The major imbalance body symptoms that directly related to the infertility are kidney deficient, liver Qi congestion and Dampness (spleen deficiency). TCM treatments for infertility are concentrated on these issues.
In TCM, kidney is not just an organ; it means the whole psycho and physical relationship of kidney function and its meridian pathways. Kidney deficiency is result of either genetic influences, or lifetime habits and illnesses. All chronic imbalances affect the kidney meridian, common kidney deficiency symptoms are lack of menstruation, prolonged menstrual cycles with pale menstrual discharge, low back pain, frequent urination, low sex drive, later first period (16y, 17y); emotionally, infertile patients often show a lot of fear, their tongue looks pale, their pulses often deep and weak; sometimes abortion or miscarriage may also cause kidney deficiency.
Case1: 41 years old female, already has a 3-year-old boy; recent years, period became very light and last only two days; her vagina was very dry, she had frequent urination; her tongue looked pale, her pulse was deep. In order to get pregnant again, she already had 4 circle medications with IUI, but did not work. When she came to our clinic, she had already filled another prescription, and was preparing for the fifth IUI. On initial consultation, Dr. Xie suggested that she stop medication and IUI for several months and try acupuncture treatment. After two months, she was pregnant.
Emotional frustration is the main cause of the liver Qi congestion, such as having a job he or she doesn't enjoy, often working long hours, and unhappy family life. Physical symptoms of liver Qi congestion include irregular periods, cramp, dark colored bleeding, clots, breast tender before period, headache, PMS, angry and upset easily. Such patient often shows a tight pulse and red tongue. Liver Qi stagnation affects the blood flow in the pelvic cavity. Using acupuncture treatment, in conjunction with herbal medicine at the right time in the menstrual cycle will very likely clear the congestion.
Case2: A 34-year-old Japanese female, looked so unhappy when she first visited our clinic, her husband was the only son in the family, they expected to have a baby so badly, that gave her a lot of pressure, she can't sleep well, her breast got very sour before the period came, her tongue looked very red, and her pulse was very tight. Her situation was a typical liver Qi congestion; therefore, the treatment was focused on the liver and heart meridian. She was also told not having spice food, chocolate and deep-fried food during the period of treatment. After five months acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment, she was pregnant.
Spleen is the organ which responsible for digestive system of a human body, if a woman has spleen deficiency; she could have problems with production of blood and Qi and could also accumulating dampness in her systems. Patient with dampness often has symptoms like overweight, missing period, lot of discharge, dizzy, tightness in chest, diarrhea. Patient's tongue looks coated, pulse is weak, and often shows some kind of depression.
Case3: A 39-year-old female, has been married for 12 years, everything was fine according to the conventional medical test. Her first period started when she was 16, she had chronic low back pain, and it worsened when she had her period, her stomach got upset easily, she also has anemia, and always feel cold. Her tongue looked pale and coated, her pulse was weak. She had kidney and spleen deficiency according to TCM diagnosis. After initial visit to our clinic, she decided to try acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment, postpone her already scheduled IVF. After 2-month acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment she was pregnant.
Although modern medicine is getting very sophisticated in its treatment of infertility, the majority of the treatments do not succeed.
According to TCM, there are 2 main reasons for this lack of success.
First, Western medicine ignores the importance of the woman's constitution which is not just general health, but body balance as well. Patient will say, I do not have any health problems, I excise regularly, I eat healthy, and I am a vegetarian; that does not mean their constitution is good. For example, vegetable is not good for people who are Yang deficiency, eating salads (cold nature food) for years is not the best diet for a person who has generally a low basal body temperature. Sometimes eating meat such as lamb (warming food) can help nourishing a "cold" barren uterus.
Chinese medicine has the tools to diagnose constitutional deficiencies and treat them successfully. A proper combination of acupuncture and diet will provide good preparation for the woman prior to getting pregnant. This will ensure her a safe and healthy pregnancy, a healthy baby and a quick recovery.
Second, Inability of Western medicine to recognize the body and mind are connected.
Emotion affects the body balance, while physical imbalance affects the person's emotion. If a woman tries to get pregnant unsuccessfully for a period of time, she is very easy to get frustrated, which makes getting pregnant more difficult. Acupuncture could help reducing the stress and relaxing the uterus of patients.
Acupuncture and TCM helps Assisted Reproductive Techniques in many ways, such as minimizes undesired side effects and accumulated toxicity from invasive procedures and drug therapies, known and unknown; strengthen and balance one's general health so that IVF, GIFT, IUI, ICSI and other procedures are more effective. Infertile patient derives general health benefits and endocrine system balancing from specific acupuncture and herbal medicine. Pregnancy becomes easier to achieve and postpartum recuperation happens fast.
Recent medical research showed the advantages of using acupuncture in Assisted Reproductive Techniques. Two teams of researchers in Germany and China have found that adding acupuncture to the treatment regimen of women using assisted reproductive techniques to have a child can dramatically improve the women's chance of getting pregnant. Their findings were published in the April issue of Fertility and Sterility and widely reported in the popular press.
Women's uterus typically undergoes several contractions while an embryo is being transferred, which reduces the chance of successful implantation significantly, acupuncture could help relax the uterus during the procedure.
Case1: a 40-year-old female musician with a very stress and busy life, had three times failed IVF, was trying fourth time. The acupuncture treatment she received aimed not only for uterus but also for her stress. She was pregnant with her fourth IVF.
Case2: a 38-year-old single female, tried six circles of IUI, didn't work. She was over weighted, got tired easily and had hard time to concentrate. Her bowl movement either constipated or diarrhea. After one month acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment, she got pregnant with the following IUI.

Endometriosis is a disease affecting women in their reproductive years. Tissue like the endometrium is found outside the uterus, in other areas of the body. In these locations outside the uterus, the endometrial tissue develops into what are called "nodules," "tumors," "lesions," "implants," or "growths." These growths can cause pain, infertility, and other problems. Treatments for endo include painkillers, hormonal; surgery are not curable but very bad side effects. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine treatment for endo is trying to balance the body systems and hormones to stop the tissue growing outside the uterus.
Menopause in women, the time when the menstrual period becomes less frequent, and finally stop altogether, is known as menopause. It may occur at any time between the ages of 40 and 50, although most women experience the symptoms in the ages from 47 to 50. Apart from the physical changes of menopause, many women experience other symptoms include hot flushes, nervous tension and irritability, palpitations, tinnitus, constipation and sleepless. Hormonal replacement is the most commonly used therapy in Western medicine to reduce some of the symptoms of menopause. However, some patients experience side effects, including nausea, breast tenderness and weight gain. Recent research has shown hormonal replacement therapy increases the risk of cancer of the uterus. In terms of traditional Chinese medicine, menopause is due to the declining or exhaustion of kidney Qi. This breaks the balance between Yin and Yang and disturbs the harmony within the body. By using acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to strength the Qi of kidney and to restore the balance between Yin and Yang will reduce the symptoms of menopause.
Acne is a common blemish problem that comes from natural daily production of body hair, protective skin oils and a miserable little, microscopic bacteria called Propionibacterium.
Traditional Chinese Medicine sees acne as a symptom of internal body imbalance. Usually caused by excessive damp heat in the body.
Acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine works very well for acne, the treatment is focused on balance the body systems and eliminate the damp heat.
Eczema is used to describe a variety of skin disorders characterized by itching, small blisters, oozing, redness and scaling. Eczema could occur in any age.
There are more questions than answers when it comes to eczema in modern medicine. Experts believe that a reason for eczema is the inability of skin to remoisturize, but do not know why and how this happens to a particular person in a certain part of skin. Eczema is generally described as a noninfectious, noncontagious chronic skin disorder, there is no cure. Steroid creams applied locally are the most widely used medications.
In terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine, again, eczema is caused by internal imbalance, pathogenic heat, dampness, wind mixture of them. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine treatment is to cool the internal heat, remove the dampness and expel the wind. This approach has been tried and tested for thousands of years and is well documented in the traditional Chinese medicine literature.
It is also important, according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine, to maintain a proper diet during acupuncture and herb treatment to prevent recurrence. As described above, eczema is mainly attribute to excess heat and dampness inside the body. It is helpful to have less hot and damp food or drink, such as lamb, chili, curry, onion, garlic, alcohol and chocolate. Fresh fruits and vegetables are generally neutral or cold in nature, therefore are good for eczema sufferers.
Psoriasis is characterized by red patches and dry flaky skin. It can be quite localized or very widespread. In Chinese medicine, psoriasis is caused by excessive heat in the Blood. This heat causes the red patches, and the nature of heat is to dry up or consume the body fluids, leading to dryness.
This heat can develop from many different sources. For example, alcohol is hot energetically and excessive consumption of alcohol can cause heat to accumulate in the Blood leading to psoriasis. Certain foods are warming or hot in their nature and excessive consumption of these also can lead to psoriasis.
Stress is often associated with psoriasis. Unmanaged stress causes the energy (qi) of our bodies to get 'stuck'. When the qi cannot flow smoothly then it generates heat. This is similar to a car stuck in a traffic jam on the motorway; the car is ticking over but not moving and gradually the car gets hotter and hotter.
There is also what is known as a 'empty heat'. This is a little different and requires a note of explanation. The basic philosophy of Chinese medicine consists of 'Yin and Yang ' and these have many meanings depending on the context, indeed everything in the universe can be described in terms of Yin and Yang. Yang is Heat (Fire) and Yin is Cool (Water). When there is not enough Yin then there is a relative excess of Yang. This is termed 'Empty Heat'. This can also contribute to 'heat in the Blood ' leading to psoriasis.
These are not the only sources of heat. For example, babies develop heat in the blood from the mother during pregnancy. This is termed 'foetal heat'.
To treat this condition, it is important to identity where the heat is coming from.
There are many acupuncture points that are used to clear heat. If the qi is stuck, then acupuncture is very effective at moving Qi and so dispersing heat. Psoriasis that is localized requires a different approach to psoriasis that is more systemic. All psoriasis will require a course of acupuncture treatment and the number of treatments will depend on the severity of the psoriasis and the underlying causes. Chinese herbal medicine will be used with acupuncture for psoriasis sometimes.
Many pharmaceutical creams may improve the symptoms, but they often drive the heat deeper into the body and in doing so, they make the condition more chronic.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is an intestinal disorder causing a variety of symptoms. People with IBS may suffer from chronic diarrhea, bloating, constipation, gas, irregular bowels, which no structures or biochemical cause can be found. The exact cause of IBS is unknown, but stress, depression, hypersensitivity to certain hormones, diet, and medications may be contributing the factors.
Ulcerative colitis is a disease of the large intestine (colon) characterized by inflammation of the lining of the intestinal tract and rectal bleeding. It, along with anther condition called Crohn's disease, falls into the category of inflammatory bowel disease. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease that comes in waves or "flare-ups". The most common symptoms of flare-up are bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain. Excessive blood loss can lead to fatigue as a result of anemia. Ulcerative colitis can become serious enough to require surgery.
The Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment for these digestive disorders is not based on the individual condition or disease, but to see imbalance of all systems in the body and the relationships between the systems; to treat the root of the problems rather than treat the symptoms. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine not only treat the primary condition but relieves the accompanying anxiety or depression as well.
Bell's Palsy. Virus infection cause the facial nerve paralysis, the corner of the mouth droops, the forehead is furrowedless, and the eyelids will not close. The patient also experiences a heaviness or numbness in the face. The patient usually had cold or flu. 2 weeks before the symptom start. Occasionally, the condition goes away with rest and proper nutrition; at other times, it may last for years. Acupuncture therapy is very effective. The treatment should be daily at beginning.
Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is a disorder of unilateral facial pain. While the exact cause is unknow, it is thought that TN results from irritation of the trigeminal nerve. TN commonly occur in middle-aged and elderly people and affect women more often than men. The pain of TN is excruciating, often occur in the lips, gums, or chin and sometime in the temple area. The attacks are initiated by stimulus such as light touch of the skin, chewing, washing the face, and brushing the teeth. In some individuals the attacks may be initiated by non-painful physical stimulation of specific areas that are located on the same side of the face as the pain. Acupuncture treatments are safe and effective in relieving pain and bringing the condition under the control in most cases.
Consider an Acupuncture face-lift
While going for an "acupuncture face lift" may sound like a trendy fix, it's not new - Chinese emperors of long ago used facial needling to stave off signs of aging. With more people using acupuncture to treat a number of health conditions, it's gaining ground as a viable alternative to riskier, more expensive anti-aging treatments.
-- BODY & SOUL OCTOBER 2004 (page 84)
Stress is created when a person responds to the demands and pressures that come from the family and other external sources, as well as those that are internally generated from self-improve demands and obligations. Stress can add up over time until a state of crisis is reached, untreated, these conditions may lead to physical illness, such as migraine, menstrual problems, psoriasis, back pain, neck pain and sometimes death. Stress may not be very harmful in the short term. If it extends for a long period of time, stress may cause short temper, restlessness and other symptoms. This chronic stress is particularly harm, because it is the direct or indirect cause of many illnesses. Acupuncture can unblock the energy channel of the body and help the body to relax.
Until now, modern medicine could offer people with depression only a pill or the prospect of talking it out, sometimes for years. Soon, though, doctors may offer an alternative - the 5,000-year-old Chinese art of Acupuncture.
In a recent University of Arizona study, clinically depressed women received eight weeks of acupuncture, in which practitioners gently pressed needles into specific body points to correct imbalances believed to trigger illness. The results: After getting treatments aimed at relieving depression, about two-thirds were cured of the condition, a rate similar to that achieved with antidepressants and psychotherapy.
(Researchers ruled out the placebo effect by giving one group acupuncture at points believed to be unrelated to depression.)
Although the study, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health's Office of Alternative Medicine, is preliminary, author John Allen, Ph.D., believes acupuncture eventually may benefit people for whom other treatments fail. Unlike antidepressant drugs, for instance, acupuncture has no side effects. And Allen predicts that it may offer the best way yet to forestall future episodes of depression. That's a significant worry, since people who've suffered one bout of depression have a 50 percent chance of enduring another.
